Watercolor on Claybord Technique
Watercolor on Claybord panel is a unique, nontraditional style of watercolor painting. Claybord is pure white, ceramic-like and smooth surface that is as permanent but more durable than paper. Unlike the “one-time” fluid nature of watercolors on paper, multiple layers of paint can be applied. Transparencies, as well as intensities of color, are achieved by this method. In addition, masking techniques are utilized for manipulation of the visual depth of the hues. Several masking procedures including, masking fluid, painters tape, adhesive mesh tape, can be utilized to manipulate the surface.
One benefits to painting on Claybord, as opposed to paper is the exclusion of glass and framing is optional. When the Claybord panel is complete, three to four layers of acrylic varnish are sprayed onto the surface. The effect is a sensual and tactile surface with an inviting glossy finish.
