Sunflower Series

Yasunami Kawabata, in his poignant Nobel Prize address…spoke of the Oriental taste for the single flower... the single flower contains more brightness than a hundred flowers…the form of the body.

I am drawn to the sunflower for it’s brilliance, stature, and the seemingly obedient movement as it follows the light of the sun. After intent observation, I select a single, winter-weathered subject declined the summer brilliance that Van Gogh might have painted, one with a blackened face and yellow petals. The intricacies and myriad shapes inspire an array of drawings and paintings aptly named, “Sunflower Series”.

The paintings are emotional, colorful, complex and also, meditative and serene. I attempt to capture the spiritual essence and beauty found in a single flower enticed from its oneness with nature.

Finally, by Eckhart Tolle, seeing beauty in a flower can awaken you, however briefly, to the beauty that is an essential part of your innermost being, your true nature.
